Hi, my father in law recently gave us his old german sbs cookers. I was wondering if anyone had any idea about them and general principles of using them?
They are in perfect condition but I have only tried cooking vegetables so far, which went well.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Ginny, I would urge you to be very cautious in trying to resurrect a vintage pressure cooker. Given that it's old, the gasket material and any other rubber
parts must be replaced as a first step safety precaution. Because it's from an unknown foreign manufacturer, it's quite unlikely that you will find any
replaceable parts in the US.
Additionally, as with any old pressure cooker, they lack the safety mechanisms available on even the least inexpensive pressure cooker made today. If it is made from aluminum, then it's probably well pitted because the inferior metal casting procesess, and each of those tiny pits is a breeding ground for bacteria, and they are impossible to clean. As you can see, these old pressure cookers pose a safety concern, and its probably not worth the risk of attempting to use this old pressure pot. Please read the article about Vintage Pressure Cookers on the website for more details. I would recommend that you retire that pressure cooker. Display it as a memento if it has sentimental value, but don't try to use it. If you are interested in presssure cookery, the new modern brands that are available today are far superior to the old models, not just in the matter of safety, but ease of use, versatilty, and economy.
