I have a cook-rite pressure cooker(PAT. No. 202590) but no instruction book. I cannot find even a listing for this company! Im a first time user of a pressure
cooker. Can anyone help me out and tell me my first steps in using it? I usually use a water bath, but my garden has grown and would like to use it for other
veggies... Any help will be appriciated!

Hi Risingbutterfly,
According to a post on another forum, the Sears 16 qt Model 620.46000 is equivalent to the Cook-Rite Model A. http://forum.epicurean.com/webbbs/webbbs_conf4.pl?read=16210 Old Sears pressure cooker parts can be found at the link below (among other places). The product booklet is not available separately but as part of a regulator kit. http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/searspressurecookerparts.htm I'm not sure how good this info is, as another site says that Presto makes Sears' pressure cookers. I've checked the Presto website history - no indication Presto has ever used "Cook-Rite" on its products. It is possible that Sears used Cook-Rite before Presto. A search of the US patent & trademark office indicates there was a COOK-RITE PRODUCTS, INC of Newark, NJ making cookware back in the '60s, but this trademark is expired. There are a few other companies using Cook-Rite trademarks, but this was the best match. Re the patent, it may be missing a digit or two; patents issued recently have 8 digits. US patent 202590 was issued back in 1878 and has to do with simulating sunlight on a globe ("Improvement in Tellurians"). Re using the pressure cooker, first check the parts for obvious signs of defect and check the gasket for cracks. Then read "Test Drive Your Pressure Cooker" http://missvickie.com/workshop/testdrive.html . It has a paragraph at the bottom specifically for vintage PCs. On your test drive, be fully clothed - long sleeves, long pants legs, no open toed shoes, no low cut blouse or bare midriff. Even if the gasket looks good, it may be old and blow out (which someone documented elsewhere - she had bare midriff - ouch!) or the lid or vessel lips can be warped. Best of Luck, Peter

This antique canner is not reliable from a food safety standpoint. The gauges on pressure canners need to be tested annually for accuracy to be sure you are processing foods at the precise pressure required. You can make minor timing adjustments if the gauge is just slightly off, but if it varies by more than a couple of points, it must be replaced. Although Presto may carry a suitable replacement gasket, I'm not aware that they also carry new gauges for this model. To process most garden produce, you must you a pressure canner because the waterbath method does not get hot enough to properly can those low-acid foods. Don't take canning slightly, you need to get the proper equipment, and it must be kept in good working order in ensure the food you process is safe to eat; unfortunately this old relic isn't up to the task. So, my advice is to retire this vintage canner and invest in a new model so that you aren't inadvertently putting your family at risk. |
